Where Good Influence Comes In: Brand Genesis and Storytelling

In partnership with the CEO of 4.0 Schools, Good Influence embarked on a journey to creatively tell the story of 4.0’s genesis, vision, mission, and theory of change. In the spirit of 4.0’s mission and values, we produced a graphic chapbook that could serve as a touchstone document to guide and anchor all members of the 4.0 community--from staff to program coaches, founders, funders, and families. It also included a discussion guide to help the audience connect the story’s characters, setting, and plot elements to the people and change-making process at 4.0.

Good Influence brought on a team of creative youth of color who led the visual storytelling, including a Black public high school student who painted all of the watercolor visuals. Our charge was to tell the story of 4.0’s theory of change by building a real and unreal world and a cast of characters that embody the spirit of rebellion and revolution that defines 4.0’s ethos and mission.

Good Influence’s Deliverables:

  • Directed creative strategy, graphic design, content, and publication for Good Trouble at 4.0

  • Partnered with a high school student who painted all of the watercolor visuals for the chapbook

  • Designed a companion discussion guide for 4.0 staff and leaders

  • Conducted interviews and storytelling feedback sessions to co-create and refine content

Why 4.0 Matters:

Our education system is a tale of two cities. One is a tale of enlightenment, access, and opportunity for some--a story that evokes modern-day images of first-generation college students opening doors and homes for themselves and their communities. The other is a tale of fear, denigration, and exclusion for others--one that conjures modern day images of the public school to prison pipeline. Recognizing the liberation and oppression inherent in our country’s approach to schooling, 4.0 seeks to find, fund, and cultivate innovative ways to disrupt and transform how we learn.
